Why Tai Chi?

Many initiatives, such as Health Challenge Wales, suggest that organisations should encourage everyday physical activity in their workforce.

However, many workplace-based regimes are not suitable for all employees. For example, aerobic exercise and sports do not appeal to everyone, while yoga is not always appropriate for individuals whose previous experience of taking physical exercise is limited.

Tai Chi developed in China at least 2000 years ago. It is a self-paced, low-impact system of gentle physical exercise that is becoming increasingly popular in the West. Tai Chi movements are often called 'Moving Meditation'; they help facilitate energy flow, fitness, relaxation and mental concentration.

Tai Chi requires no special skill, clothing or equipment and can be done anywhere, alone or with a group. Basic forms take between 5 and 20 minutes to perform and are easy to learn.

There are virtually no down sides to Tai Chi: it is suitable for everyone and brings benefits to the individuals and the employer.

Regular practice may

reduce stress
improve muscle strength and flexibility
increase energy and stamina
improve cardiovascular fitness
increase feelings of well-being
improve sleep quality
reduce high blood pressure
